The composition is based on the relationship between wood and steel, I was instantly drawn by the energy and dynamism that these two elements can create when juxtaposed. They are like complimentary materials. The mystical aspect of disaffected and abandoned buildings fascinates me. I often come across ruins, rusted industrial buildings, red brick, old lumber, crumbling facades and I feel instantly drawn to these shapes and structures. There is a surreal mood, an unusual tension that surrounds these places. They are like a testimony of older times and cultures. All the steel pieces were found in a salvage yard in Statesboro that has been in business for 54 years, it is like an archeological site for the history of machinery in the south of the united states. Each element I chose is connected through their mass and direction. In addition, they noticeably come from the same era, as the style of their design is similarly blunt and rugged. Their initial function becomes secondary in the sculpture, as the viewer is drawn by the different visual connections between the pieces. I am amazed at how energy is generated by taking items out of their context and grouping them together in one unified whole.There is no sophistry in the found piece of wood, it genuinely represents past enterprises. Its only purpose is to be a part of history. The finished piece is like a condensed time lapse of machinery, architecture and man made structures in general.The wood was sealed with tung oil and the whole structure was varnished.
